Tenebrae is sometime called the service of darkness or service of shadows. It is a reflective service of readings and chanting lead by the Men’s Choir. It opens those who attend to the solemnness of Holy Week. The service begins with a series of several lit candles throughout the church, and slowly throughout the service the candles are extinguished, symbolizing Jesus’ light leaving the world. At the end of the service the Christ candle is carried out, to represent Jesus’ death, followed by a loud noise, symbolizing the closing of Jesus’ tomb. Worshippers then leave the church in silence. This is a powerful and reflective service and one that everyone should make an effort to attend at least once.
